Massachusetts Rep. John Tierney has lost ground in his reelection campaign and now trails Republican challenger Richard Tisei, according to a poll taken for the GOP super PAC Young Guns Action Fund and shared with POLITICO.

Tisei, a former state Senate minority leader, draws 45 percent support in the poll, which was conducted by the Republican firm North Star Opinion Research. Tierney trails with 37 percent.

Though Tierney is a Democratic congressman in a strongly Democratic state, Republicans have targeted him for defeat due to a family scandal that resulted in his wife’s conviction on charges related to her brother’s alleged tax crimes. The Young Guns group has spent over nearly $1 million to pummel him on TV, online and in the mail with attacks like this mailer saying: “Patrice Tierney goes to prison, John Tierney goes to Congress!”

“What kind of man would throw his wife under the bus to save his own political career?” another mailer asked.
